Google Photos is a good place to keep a family’s photos in one shared album, and it can turn them into a quick highlight video with music. A group video gift is different: each person adds a photo with a few words, and the video shows whose memory each one is. The video above is our real example.

A frame from the example video: an old black-and-white photo of three women and a boy sitting in the grass, the message “Love you, sis!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Lilia”.

Is a Google Photos shared album a good way to collect family photos?

Yes, for collecting and keeping them. Google’s help says that when you share a link to an album, anyone with the link can view the photos and add to the album. Contacts with a Google Account can get it directly. The album stays as a collection the whole family can browse.

  • One album for everyone

Photos from many phones in one place, to browse and keep.

  • Share by link

Anyone with the link can view the photos and add to the album, says Google’s help.

  • A quick highlight video

On the computer, pick photos and get a video with music.

Happy tears for everybody, memories forever.

What does a highlight video leave out?

Mostly the words, and who each memory came from. Google’s help page on highlight videos describes choosing photos, previewing, reordering clips and changing the music. It does not mention adding words to each photo. In a gift from a group, the few words and the face of the sender are often what people remember most.

A frame from the example video with three marks: the old photo of three women and a boy in the grass, the message “Love you, sis!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Lilia”.
  1. A photo from the sender’s archive. One that only this person had.
  2. A round portrait. It shows who sent the photo. It is optional.
  3. A few words. Up to 40 characters, in the sender’s own voice.

This frame comes from our example, a surprise for a mother’s 65th birthday: 8 people in 3 countries sent 19 photos in two days. Each photo arrived with its own words, so the video reads like a conversation.

The practical part

Key facts, which one to use, three steps and timing.

What are the key facts?

A shared album collects and keeps photos; a group video gift turns them into a film with a few words on each photo. Google facts come from two Google Photos help pages, read on October 30, 2026. We make FromAll.gift, so check Google’s pages yourself; they may differ by device.

Which one should you use?

Use a shared album to collect and keep photos, and a group video when you want a gift with words. Many families need both: an album to keep every photo, and a short video for the birthday or Mother’s Day. Here is how to tell which one you need right now.

Choose a group video gift if

  • Each person should say a few words.
  • You want a designed video for the TV and a 9:16 version for phones.
  • Guests should need no sign-up and no app.
  • You want to watch it together on the day.

Choose a shared album if

  • You want to keep every photo, not just the best 30.
  • The family wants to browse at their own pace.
  • A quick video with music is enough.
  • You need something for the long term, not one day.

How do you make a group video from the family’s photos? Three steps

Add a few photos, send one link, press “Make the video”. Each guest adds one or two photos and a few words. The video can be built once there are 10 photos, and it takes up to 10 hours. Watch the free preview, then change anything before you pay.

  2. Step 2Send one linkPost the ready message in the family chat.
  3. Step 3Press “Make the video”It needs 10 photos in all. Watch the free preview, fix anything, pay once.

The app writes the invitation for you, with the name you enter:

  • Hi! 🎁 I’m making a surprise video for Grandma from everyone’s photos, and I’d love you to be in it. Could you add photos with Grandma (and a short line for each), ideally today? Just photos: no selfie video, no sign-up, about a minute. Know anyone else who should be in it? Pass the link on. Shh, it’s a secret!

Already have a shared album? As the organizer you can add photos from it yourself, up to 30 in all, with a line for each.

How early should you start?

About a week before the day, so everyone has time to add a photo. The video takes up to 10 hours to build after you press “Make the video”, and if it is not ready within 20 hours, you can cancel the order. Starting and the preview are free; after it you pay $39 for up to 15 photos or $49 for up to 30.
