When a friend moves away, everyone adds a photo with them and a few words, and the photos become one professionally made video they can take to the new city. The video above is our real example, made for a mother’s 65th birthday.

A frame from the example video: an old sepia family portrait of a mother, a father and two boys, the message “The whole family together”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Alex”.

What do you give a friend who is moving away?

Something that fits in their phone and brings all of you along. Picture the going-away party: the first apartment, the late nights, the trips, the friends from every circle, each with a photo and a few words. Under each photo, the name of the friend who sent it.

  • For the move
  • From all friends
  • To take along
  • A vertical frame from the example video: two women sitting together on a sofa in front of a bookshelf, the message “Love you, my dear!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Kate”.
    Love you, my dear!Kate
  • A vertical frame from the example video: an old black-and-white family portrait of a woman, a small boy and a man, the message “And here I am!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Leo”.
    And here I am!Leo
  • A vertical frame from the example video: an old black-and-white photo of three women and a boy sitting in the grass, the message “Love you, sis!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Lilia”.
    Love you, sis!Lilia
  • A vertical frame from the example video: a smiling woman in a pink blouse holding a baby in a red Santa suit, the message “Your newest love!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Tim”.
    Your newest love!Tim

All four frames are from our real example, made for a mother’s 65th birthday: 8 people in 3 countries, 19 photos in two days, and not a single recorded clip.

Why a video instead of a farewell card?

A card gets packed in a box; the video plays on the first lonely evening. In a new city, the first weeks are the hardest. A video from everyone is something to watch on the first lonely evening. Each frame holds the full photo, a few words and a small round portrait of the sender.

A frame from the example video with three marks: an old black-and-white family portrait of a woman, a small boy and a man, the message “And here I am!”, and a round portrait labelled “Photo from Leo”.
  1. A photo together. The best night, the worst haircut.
  2. A round portrait. It shows who sent the photo. It is optional.
  3. A few words. Up to 40 characters.

Lines that fit the 40-character limit:

  • “Don’t forget us!”

  • “Visit soon!”

  • “Best roommate ever!”

  • “Same time next summer?”

  • “Go chase it!”

  • “You’ll always have a couch here!”

More ideas are in What to write in a group video message.

Who can add a photo?

Friends from every circle, coworkers, neighbors and family. Start with the closest friends and pass the link on. After adding a photo, each guest is asked who else should be in the video. Nobody needs an account or an app to take part.

  • best friends
  • roommates
  • coworkers
  • neighbors
  • teammates
  • gym friends
  • college friends
  • family
  • book club
  • the gang
  • bartenders
  • travel buddies
  • choir
  • dog park friends
  • old classmates
  • cousins
  • landlord
  • everyone

What if the move is soon?

A few days are enough if you send the link today. The video needs only 10 photos, and after you press “Make the video” it is ready within 10 hours. Nobody signs up or records anything. Nobody needs an account or an app to take part.

Is there a version for phones?

Yes. You get two videos from the same photos: 16:9 for the TV and 9:16 for phones. Both are made at the same time and included in one price. Play the 16:9 video at the farewell party and send the 9:16 version to their phone for the trip.

  • 16:9 for the TV. Play it at the party or on a video call.
  • 9:16 for phones. It fills the screen. Send it to everyone who took part.
  • One price for both. The same photos, words and music in each.

  2. Step 2Send one linkSend the ready message to friends, not the one who is moving.
  3. Step 3Press “Make the video”It needs 10 photos in all. Watch the free preview, fix anything, pay once.

The app writes the invitation for you, with the name you enter:

  • Hi! 🎁 I’m making a surprise video for Alex from everyone’s photos, and I’d love you to be in it. Could you add photos with Alex (and a short line for each), ideally today? Just photos: no selfie video, no sign-up, about a minute. Know anyone else who should be in it? Pass the link on. Shh, it’s a secret!

Who pays, and how much?

One person pays once, after the free preview: $39 for up to 15 photos or $49 for up to 30. Guests take part for free and never enter a card. Anyone who has the gift link can pay, so friends can chip in among themselves. The TV version, the phone version and the music are all included.

How early should you start?

About a week before the farewell. Moving weeks are hectic, so start early and send one reminder. Building takes up to 10 hours after you press “Make the video”. Nobody needs an account or an app to take part.
